About Papa Bear Child Care Centre

Papa Bear Child Care Miranda is a family focused child care centre on Parraweena Road, Miranda. Children from eight weeks up to five years of age are cared for by passionate, long-term educators. The multicultural background of the educators allows for cultural experiences for the children. This Christian centre places a great value on connections with the families in their care, and offers a home-like environment for children.

The large outdoor play areas offer play equipment, cubby house, large sandpit and nature garden. Inside, the centre enjoys plenty of natural light, and the older children take part in interactive workshops, regular excursions on the centre’s own bus, and lots of free play time.

Open from 7.00 am - 6.00 pm, the centre offers easy access to Port Hacking Road for commuting parents, and is just minutes away from Caringbah and Miranda train stations. It has been operating since 2014.

 • Bear ChildCare Bus Excursions: the centre has its very own excursion bus that improves learning opportunities for the older children by taking them on excursions to stimulate their creative minds. Excursions include visiting a local aged care facility, local parks, Bunnings, the library or supermarket. The children love using the centre’s bus to explore further afield.
 • Sustainability program: includes activities such as gardening, worm farms, compost bins, recycling, Return & Earn program and major recycling projects.
 • Incursions: children enjoy experiences such as chicken hatching, reptile shows, and Indigenous presentations.
 • Cooking experiences: the children help with meal prep, collecting ingredients from the veggie garden, and enjoying demonstrations from the centre cook.
 • School readiness program: preparing children for formal education, working closely with families and local schools.
 • Munch & Move program: focuses on fresh, nutritious food for the children, as well as an outdoor physical developmental program.

Moving our son to a new daycare was the best decision we could have made. Our experience with the management at Papa Bear showed a profound lack of empathy, support, and professional boundaries.

While attending the center, our toddler went through a biting phase. We took this very seriously, actively working on strategies at home and consulting external professionals (including going through an OT assessment).

We were told multiple times by his room educators that this was age-appropriate behavior. However, management lacked transparency; we were only informed that a specific child was being targeted after the matter had escalated to leadership.

Instead of partnering with us, management escalated our stress during an already vulnerable time for our family. Specifically, two days before I was scheduled for a C-section in a high-risk pregnancy to welcome our second child, management sent stressful emails regarding our son's behavior, showing zero compassion for our family's circumstances. Despite the fact that we were physically at the center for daily drop-offs and pick-ups, management preferred to communicate via email rather than having a conversation or calling us.

Most concerningly, during a meeting to discuss these behavioral challenges, the Center Director explicitly told us that when her children bit, she bit them back to ensure it was not going to repeat the behavior. Hearing this from the leader of a childcare facility was incredibly alarming and made it clear that Papa Bear lacked the professional framework to handle toddler development safely and constructively.

The contrast since leaving has been night and day. Our son has been at his new daycare for two months now and is thriving. In a supportive, collaborative environment, he has not had a single biting incident and has adjusted beautifully.

While some of the room educators were kind and supportive, the leadership and management style at Papa Bear is unsupportive, opaque, and unprofessional. If you want a center that genuinely partners with families and employs safe, modern approaches to childhood development, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
