About Evatt Primary School - Preschool Unit
Evatt Primary School, opened in 1974, is located in one of Canberra's northern suburbs and is set amongst a beautiful backdrop. It is named after one of Australia's foremost legal-political figures, Dr Herbert Vere Evatt (1894-1965). In the 1940 elections, Evatt won the Sydney seat of Barton and was a member of the Fadden Ministry's Advisory War Council. In 1941 he became Attorney General and Minister for External Affairs, and later Deputy Prime Minister in the Chifley Ministry of 1946.
Evatt is a preschool to year 6 school. The current enrolment at Evatt is 350 students, including the preschool. The population includes students from 17 suburbs, including Evatt, Spence and McKellar, which are the priority enrolment areas. The school also includes 28 students in three special units who have a diagnosis of a physical or intellectual disability. The school population is diverse in terms of family types, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum in line with the new Australian Curriculum, meeting local and individual needs. Japanese is the LOTE (Language Other Than English) taught at Evatt School since 2014. All K-6 students in the school participate in one lesson of Japanese per week. Lessons are undertaken in our Japanese room which features Japanese style furniture and Japanese artefacts and displays.
