About Acacia Early Education and Care Centre
Acacia is a medium size centre (64 places) situated in the Attorney General’s building that has created a strong sense of ‘community’ with the children and families that attend the centre. This has been created by having a shared outdoor learning space for all children of the service as well as a shared dining area which is the central hub of the centre – it is used for all meals, group and community events, and simply as a place to meet and chat.
Acacia recently initiated an audit to review how the centre can improve its sustainability practices, and planned and created a mud kitchen in the outdoor yard for the children to explore and learn from (which was very well received by the children). Acacia has been working with the Canberra environment centre in a three year initiative to establish and maintain vegetable and herb gardens. The children have been very involved in this project taking part in a program called ‘ grow together’ where they learn about gardening, healthy foods and sustainable practices. This year the children of Acacia were even able to take this a step further by selling some of their produce by setting up a small stall out the front of the centre. The money raised from this was then used to buy new seeds and resources to continue to add to their garden’s growth.
